Peter Rouch KCMurder CaseWe were instructed to represent a young man accused of murder. His trial followed that of multiple others, one of who was found guilty of murder. Our client was being tried on his own as he had absented himself from the country before the main trial took place.
This case was a tough one because the evidence in one sense was weak, as the Crown asserted the Defendant had in his hand a knife that simply wasn’t apparent in the CCTV. On the other hand the defendant had previous conviction relating to knife crime in exactly the same park as the murder took place. Thankfully we kept the previous conviction from the jury which assisted us in securing the acquittal we did.
The case required much preparation and attention, especially given the fact a previous trial we had no part to play in had taken place but in which our client featured heavily. The Defendant was young and of a very nervous disposition, no doubt due to the fact he was being prosecuted for something of which he was utterly adamant was innocent. His nerves often caused him to oscillate as to what to do.
Those instructing ensured in the run up to the trial the defendant was fully aware of the allegations against him and advised him correctly and properly throughout. This instilled a confidence in the client that allowed him hold his nerve helping us to secure his acquittal. This was unquestionably the correct decision.
